Preger recently took questions from fans on the official facebook page and posted their answers!
1.When is the movie coming out?
Once we have a finalized deal with a studio we would ideally like to have the film in the theatres 18 months later.2. Have any studios showed interest?
We have met with our first round of studios and are continuing to have active talks. Many things go into a studio taking on a project: budgets, schedules, etc. It’s not only finding a studio that wants to do the film, it’s about finding the RIGHT studio. Once we have some official news, you will be the first to know!3. Who is in the cast?
Casting won’t begin until a script is written, which won’t happen until we make a deal.
4. Will you hold open auditions?
This will have to be something we discuss with whatever studio we partner with. But we hear everyone’s plea and will see what we can do.5. Have you considered making a TV series instead?
Yes, initially we had thrown around the idea of a TV show, but came to the conclusion that it would make a better film. Don’t you agree?!6. Will each book be it’s own film?
YES! We are planning for a franchise in order to give each book the time and attention it deserves.7. Will Richelle be involved in the movie?
This entire world was created by Mead and it would be remiss of us to cut her out of the loop. We met with her in San Diego a few weeks ago and hope to continue a dialogue with her as the film progresses.8. Who will write the script?
We will work with the studio to match the series with a great screenwriter.9. Who will direct?
While we have some ideas of who we would like, again, this will be worked out with the studio down the road. It’s a two way road, whoever we want – has to want to do the film in return.10. What will it be rated?
Until we have a finalized film, we won’t be able to answer this question. However, it’s safe to say that we want to make a film that will make the entire fan base happy.11. Have you started location scouting?
No, but we are very excited about the potential of finding destinations around the world that bring Mead’s words to life.12. Are you going to be staying true to the story & characters?
This is a tough one to answer. Whenever you translate a book into a film, you loose some elements that sometimes leave fans upset. You have to remember that the film needs to make sense to every viewer, not just the literary fans, and we only have about 90 minutes to 2 hours to do that. Many times that means streamlining the story and leaving out a few details. BUT we are committed to staying true to the essence of the series.13. Have the Producers read the entire series?
YES! Before obtaining the rights, Preger read the series and had his team read them as well. Before Murphy joined forces with Preger, he read the series too!14. What made you interested in VA?
The strong female lead made this “vampire” story unique because most of the female leads we are seeing are weak and needing to be saved by a man. In VA, Rose is the one saving others – even guys! Also, the friendship between Rose and Lissa was written to be just as strong as the love story between Rose and Dimitri – which we felt was a great spin. Mead took the century old story of “the vampire” to the next level!

Omg we both absolutly LOVE! the vampire academy series and weve read the books soo many times ive lost count but the movie wont be great unless you follow the description of the characters and thats were twilight went wrong the only people who fit the charatcer is Alice and Jacob but if you choose the right cast this movie will make twilight look like a mistake and im a twilight fan and i only read the book and prefer it than twilight and my bff and i have planned to get a promise mask we were 18! lol i want to

OMG this is amazing!!!!!!! I love VA so much, my friend and I are media students and we have
talked about this book being turned into a film. It would be amazing if you did casting in other
places because america can be hard to get to from New Zealand, plus we have great locations
for the film haha its true. Oh and Hurricane ft. Kanya West suits the book serious so well. You
should listen to it….SO HAPPY

If you decide to hold open auditions, could you please ensure that there are some in Australia
because there is a large fan base here who would love to have a chance to be considered
and not all of us can fly overseas just to audition.

these r going to be great movies i hope a studio gets picked soon. who wouldnt want to do these
movies? all u have to do is read just 1 book and ur hooked, just like i was

Hey guys!
I think it’s clear that that the
I know it’s a bit early and it really isn’t in my place to jump and say who I think should be casted
as the VA characters, but really, don’t you guys think that Ben Barnes is just completely
scrumptious and just fits the description of Dimitri perfectly? Dimka is that tall, mysterious,
debonair, type and I believe that Ben Barnes would do an excellent job!
But I think that the first book, (despite the fact that it isn’t as graphic as the others ) should be
Rated R for a number of reasons, one in particular. Since we all agree that VA is on a different
level to Twilight because it addresses other issues other than unconditinal love, it should
surpass that pg-13 rating that twilight has, so that we all can get that same thrill as we got
from reading the books. But since we’re on the topic of lovvvve
passion and sexual tension in VA is also on waaaaay different level to twilight, and the love
scenes in twilight were a bit wack, I’m not trying to bring twilight down because I’m a big
Twilight fan but I think the movie should reflect that same passion and intensity!

Yay
i can’t wait for the movie
Open auditions would be best because it would mean that new faces would be seen and fans would probably be happier because they won’t be disappointed if an actor they don’t like is cast as their favourite character
by Paris
08 Oct 2010 at 04:31
Also, producers wouldn’t have to worry about not getting enough media attention if they used unknown actors because they books have a huge fanbase throughout the world and every person who has read the book would love to see it made into a movie

The day I heard they were making a movie for the series was the best day of my life!
I can’t wait till the movie comes out!
I sure hope they won’t mess up with the cast.I think the models on the cover best suit
to be the actors/actresses. It’s just an opinion though.
I love the series and I read each book a couple of times and in a very short period.
Averagely it took me 5 hours to finish a book.
Got all my friends into reading them too!
I simply love/adore VA <3

Does anyone know anything about auditions/casting? I’d love to be in the film, I’m a big fan of the books and can’t wait to see it on the big screen. If anyone finds out anything about auditions, casting or anything, post it on here! I’d be more than happy to send in a video of a monologue or something…

Awesome! I can’t wait either. I loved the books, I would like the love scenes to be kept clean though, if the Vampire Academy movies are rated R they’re targeting a smaller audience which is probably why they have kept the Twilight movies clean so far.

Really? they r making a movie? they have all the wrong charterers…Rose is supposed to be hot but a little chunky…:)
why’d they do that? Megan fox is not the right choice for Rose!!!!absolutely not! and the character for Lissa is all wrong, i mean shes supposed to be platinum blond hair and pale skin!! WATS wrong with all these directors trying too make a movie outta everything!! i like the books way more!!
Movies make movies look bad, i mean a movie after a book, tats bad. maybe before but not after. Books r way better, movies r for lazy ppl, with books u can make the character look like whatever u want…

I’m soooo excited to see the movies! I wonder whose gonna play Dimitri and Rose, if they cast the wrong people, it’ll through off the whole film, but I have faith in Preger, lol. But what we’re all really waiting for is Last Sacrifice to be mad e into a movie, I haven’t bought the book yet, wanted it for Christmas, sadly that didn’t happen. Can’t wait to read it!!!!!
by Deniqua Frye(White)
29 Dec 2010 at 16:35
I love the relationship Rose and Dimitri have, or had, I haven’t read Last Sacrifice yet. I like how they’ve been through a lot and how they can’t really be together because of the age thing, which I find stupid, not that Mead wrote it that way, that you can’t be with someone you love because of age, and society. Anyway, this will be a great movie and will make even nonfans fall in love with them when they see it and not just the action lol.

I think they should cut the book in half, making 2 movies out of one. I sincerely think that 1 movie is too little space to fit such an amazing action-packed book. I watch Percy Jackson movie, it sucked. Nothing that happened in the movie happened in the book. no meeting with ares, no water part, no king of the bathrooms, and no poisonous scorpion. It was horrible. I would be better split into 2 movies. more space to fit more action.
PHEW! long shpiel.

One of my biggest worries is that they won’t get the cast right! Whenever I read a book I get an image of the characters in my head and I hate when they hire the wrong actors/actresses!

Hells yeah! omfg this has made me so excited i almost had a heart plapitation! i think ben barnes is a great choice to play dimitri. gotta love our dimka <3 there is no f**king way they can get Megan Fox to play Rose. She is just all wrong for it. I have heard some rumours about Sophia Bush for Rose, but honestly she looks a little old to be playing a 17 year old. also, if they stuff up Lissa or Christian they are dead meat too. these poor producers are under a lot of pressure! i reckon julianne moore for janine hathaway! oh and bill nighy for victor dashkov..
haha anyway, thanks richelle for bringing such an awesome kick-ass story to us!

WOW…
Its sweet how so many ppl have one common interest.
Everyone is excited!
I also think that everyone has a personal image of each of the charaters in VA. Which will be difficult to please everyone. But I really hope that the actors are really good at convincing the novels characters. Especially with Don Murphy on board…the movie should be extremly awesome! Cant wait to see it!

i think all the books were amazing,
is the casting for the movies already done?
and i hope they choose the right charaters. or the movie’s just wont be good at all.
but Richelle Mead did an awesome job with the books, rose and dimitri are so adorable. <3 .
they really should have an open audition, if they haven't already got the cast.

I am obsessed with VA! I haven’t been this engrossed in a series since Twilight and while I was obsessed with that I really believe I’ve enjoyed VA more! I read the entire series in a little over a week and I miss the characters and wonder what they’re up to (pathetic, I know, LOL). I love that Rose is so strong and that the books, while written for young adults, did have more attitude, language and steamy moments than Twilight. I enjoyed all the characters, relationships and conflicts. I loved how strong Rose’s relationships were with both Lissa and Dimitri.
I really, really hope these movies are done right and not cheesy like the first Twilight. Casting is critical and while I tend to automatically visualize some high profile Hollywood actors, I almost think it’d be best if they stuck to more low profile ones so that you aren’t thinking so much about the actors and their past character roles but are able to really mold the VA characters to the actors.
As much as I could understand if they kept it pg-13 for the fan base, I do selfishly hope it’s rated R so that we can really enjoy those intense, passionate moments between Rose and Dimitri and also capture the general sexuality that occurs throughout the books.

I absolutly love the books! Finally a strong female character. I do think that unknown acters should be used for this movie, especially for the part of Rose and Lissa. I am a Twilight fan but they really did change way too much in translation from book to film. When every books are made into movies too much gets changed and the public complains and yet it still keeps happening. Please stick to the books this time! Richelle Mead wrote great stories, thats why people want to see movies of these books. So please do not mess with perfection. Richelle Mead if your reading this, thank you for your wonderful stories, I was instantly hooked. Never a dull part. Always left me wanting more, even til the end.

hey, yeah i completely agree there definitely should be open auditions in England, because there is such a wide fan base over here, as there is in America. i also feel that a new face would be good for the series, for example someone completely new for Rose, otherewise we might not get the full impression of Rose’s character, instead we would judge her on her as a real person, who may not suit the character. i would HATE it if megan fox played Rose’s part because although she is “sexy” i really dont think Rose’s character suits her very well xxx
) to do something with their lives.
This may seem forward but i would love to play the part of Rose, i have the right attitude and skin, eye and hair colour and height. And so if there were open auditions for Rose, and other characters over in England, oppertunities would be open to any aspiring actress. We don’t get as many chances as you do in America and so this would be a great chance for many people (including me lol
please come!!!!! xxxx
love the series and im so glad they will be made into movies not a tv programme soooooooooooo pleased xxx

one thing im worried about is that they will tone them down to give it a low rating PLEASE DONT BECAUSE YOU WILL RUIN THE MOVIES.Keep the movies like the books rated r. It isnt for little kids anyway they have twiligt and va should be for the older audience.
