The Moroi in Vampire Academy are gifted with magic and here you can read about the different aspects of that magic.
Elements
Around the age of 17/18 all Moroi will have specialized in one elemental power; air, water, fire or spirit. In rare cases, when Moroi don’t specialize they will most probably have heightened ability in one or two of the elements. Spirit is the most rare elemental power and it is one that has very bad side effects – after using spirit Moroi can become very depressed and angry. This is one of the reasons why Adrian drinks and smokes so much, alcohol seems to prevent Moroi from touching their magic, therefore Adrian can’t become depressed if he drinks continuously. Anti-depressants and drugs also numb the effects of spirit, as in Lissa’s case.
Compulsion
No matter what element they specialize in, all Moroi have the ability to use compulsion. When using it, a Moroi can make – or influence – a person into doing or saying anything that they want. Students at St.Vladimir’s are taught not too use compulsion on anyone and using it on a dhampir is normally very hard. Avery is probably the most skilled user of compulsion in the series, but Lissa is also a strong user. For some reason those Moroi who specialize in spirit seem to be more effective when using it. Spirit users can also use compulsion at a more advance level, by making their victim think they see something that really, isn’t there. For instance in Shadow Kiss, Lissa uses her compulsion to make Jesse believe he is covered in spiders.
Silver Stakes
Although silver stakes are a tool used only by guardians it is Moroi magic that make them so effective. Made by four different Moroi, each with one of the four elements, stakes are charmed with magic and are lethal to Strigoi. A scratch from a silver stake on a Dhampir would be just that – a scratch, but if a Strigoi were to be scratched by one it would have a much larger effect. Silver stakes are given to guardians when they graduate and because of the magic they are infused with are vital to them.
Wards
In places like St.Vladimirs and the royal court, where Moroi roam free – without the constant protection of a guardian, wards are vital. Wards are magic rings cast by Moroi using all four elements and can block Strigoi because magic is charged with life and Strigoi have none. However wards fade over time and so they have to be continually recast. They can also be broken with silver stakes, like in Frostbite.
